A Call to Avoid a Third Party

March 1, 2016

The Presidential election of 2016 is so important that it is disturbing that serious politicians are talking about a Third Party. Marco Rubio appears to be the candidate of the Republican Establishment that is willing to go the Third Party route. Yet, a Third Party effort will assure the election of Hillary Clinton and, quite possibly, throw American politics into the hands of Progressives to the Left of Barack Obama for a generation.

What is the alternative?

Clearly, the Republican Establishment is harvesting the fruits of defeat sowed by members of the U.S. House of Representatives led by John Boehner (R-OH) and members of the U.S. Senate led by Mitch McConnell (R-KY).  GOP National Committee Chairman, Reince Priebus, has been a disaster and should have resigned after the defeat of John McCain. Yet he has held on to that position through the defeat of Mitt Romney and apparently desires to remain after the defeat of the Party’s nominee in 2016.

Boehner is gone, but Priebus and McConnell remain and  must be replaced–immediately.

Instead of going for a Third Party run, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz should organize a meeting with The Donald and offer to help his campaign.

The Donald has been on autopilot promising to “self-fund” his campaign. Yet, he hasn’t spent anything near what the other candidates have spent, and is not likely to risk his fortune in a whimsical campaign he is destined to lose. The Donald also apparently doesn’t have a serious ground game and can use one. And Twitter and Pinterest messaging by the candidate himself is a recipe for disaster. Mike Murphy–the media genius behind Jeb Bush’s attack ads–should be present at this meeting and negotiate a truce.

The Donald may be inexperienced, but he is not stupid and he will enjoy negotiating a partnership that takes him to the White House. Just as he promised Chris Christie something for endorsing him, he will enjoy promising Ted Cruz appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court, accept young Marco as his Vice President and offer the Secretary of State to Jeb.

Only an audacious and generous compromise will assure that Hillary doesn’t take control of the U.S. government.
