Secretary DeVos-Bushwacked

February 8, 2017

Yesterday’s Senate vote to confirm Michigan Republican Betsy DeVos as U.S. Secretary of Education required a tie-breaking vote by the Vice President, Mike Pence. That’s good news for those areas of education in the United States with which Secretary DeVos is familiar. But, she, like President Trump, has given no indication that she is interested in higher education.

That area of education in the United States is in very dire straits ranging from high cost of a college education to lack of intellectual diversity. Moreover, as reported in Breitbart  by Dr. Susan Barry, George W. Bush and Margaret Spellings’ era appointees, who should be called “Bushwackers,” are poised to run the U.S. Department of Education.

Secretary DeVos will not know what hit her as she sits in her office and the U.S. Department of Education is administered by political appointees representing the failed policies of Margaret Spelling.

Apparently Steve Bannon, Counselor to the President, is concerned and has appointed Liberty University President, Jerry Falwell, Jr., to lead a Task Force on Education. That action is a bit late in the game, however, and when and if Falwell’s Task Force is organized and makes recommendations, the “Bushwackers” in the Department will simply ignore them.

This promises to continue a broken system of American higher education in an Administration that seeks to make America great-again.
