Kentucky Derby 2017

March 9, 2017

Thoroughbred horses are exciting to watch and when raced against others they make the heart go pitter patter. So, now is the time to track horses in contention to race in the Kentucky Derby on May 6, 2017.

Last year, I picked “Tom’s Ready” because of his breeding.

This year, three horses have won two races and stand out from the crowd:

Gunnevera, ranked #1

Classic Empire, ranked #5

McCraken, ranked #8

Gunnevera won the important “Fountain of Youth Stakes” on March 4 at Gulfstream Park in Ft. Lauderdale. McCraken was eighth in that race, far behind Gunnevera.

Classic Empire won last year’s Breeder’s Cup “Juvenile” at Santa Anita.

McCraken’s style is to run “late,” from behind the pack, and squeeze out victory in the closing yards. In a crowded Derby field, a late finishing horse has advantages.

I think breeding is very important, but training and conditioning–how many races entered before May 6, trainer experience and a jockey’s style are also important. Then there is dirt vs. synthetic surfaces.

California horses race on synthetic turf, but the Derby at Churchill Downs is run on dirt.

Factor all those into your handicapping and be prepared–to lose. A wager on the Derby.  holds many surprises and this year should be no different.
