The Sam Clovis Problem

November 2, 2017

There are very few Ph.D.s in Academe who identify themselves as “Republican.” Even fewer identify themselves as “conservative” or “very conservative,” and even fewer are active politically. So, with very few exceptions, Republican politicians seeking higher office cannot find Republican academics to flesh out their policies with academic expects.

The team of foreign policy experts on the Trump campaign was organized by Sam Clovis.

Sam Clovis is a retired Air Force General, Iowa politician, former tenured professor of economics at a small college in Sioux City, Iowa. He was apparently, the most knowledgeable person on the campaign when it came to foreign policy. And he was a former Air Force General, a qualification that is much valued by President Trump.

This link to a 2014 campaign website for Dr. Sam Clovis gives more information about Sam Clovis

Despite his political experience, however, Clovis is ignorant about most everything other than Iowa politics. But, somehow, he was chosen to form a foreign policy team and he recommended George Papadopoulos as a foreign policy “expert.”

What’s wrong here is that there are fifty to one hundred conservative experts on foreign policy and national security. On July 28, I cited the names of nine of them. None was consulted by anyone in Trump’s inner circle.

That form of ignorance defines Donald Trump’s administration and that ignorance will destroy Trump’s presidency.
