“First Europe”
One of the advantages of being isolated during a Pandemic is the “free” time created to do the work you were trained to do. One of the tasks that I set for myself last year was to return to the era we call “the Middle Ages.”
I was trained in classical Greek philosophy of the Presocratics, Plato and Aristotle, but one of my first teaching assignments was a course in Medieval political thought. I didn’t do right by my subject and decided to make amends by researching this era as thoroughly as I could.
I discovered that the early monarchies drove civilization in the West as much as the philosophers, monastics and early Popes and have begun a study of their histories. This link will take you to a first look at the beginning of research on what we call “First Europe.”.
