Jobless Trump Hires

February 5, 2021

Top jobs in a Presidential Administration are much sought after by partisans of our political parties, philosophical Conservatives, Progressive ideologues and upwardly mobile young people. Finding employment afterward is always an issue—not the least for appointees of conservative Presidents Reagan and Trump.

On January 12, NPR reported that Forbes editor, “Randall Lane wrote a column, warning businesses this way – if you hire any of Trump’s communications officials, Forbes will assume that everything your company or firm talks about is a lie.”

In the vernacular, Randall Lane is a self-important SOB, but he needn’t warn about hiring Trump people.

I was present at a gathering of Reagan Administration “Transition Team” directors where Jim Baker told us not to expect jobs in a Reagan Administration. I was fortunate not merely to get a top “job” but to be fired within five months.

Other political conservatives were less fortunate. They served well but none could find jobs after the Reagan Administration and woe to those who worked in the Trump Administration!

Donald Trump was an incompetent but wealthy man with an oversized sense of self-importance who, for reasons unknown, became a very “conservative” President.  That and his incompetence led to his reelection loss in 2020. Don’t worry for “the Donald,” he’ll get what he deserved—starting next week when Democrats in the Senate will parade his incompetence to the public hoping to persuade enough Republican Senators to vote to convict in their second Impeachment trial.

Worry more for the lower, third and fourth level, political Trump appointees seeking employment and even some second level appointees like Ken Cuccinelli. It’s good the Cuuch earned a Law degree. He can represent the aggrieved in legal disputes. One very smart dude is Nick Ayers who spent two weeks as Trump’s chief of staff and quit. It’s worth reading about that in Michael Wolff’s Seige. Trump Under Fire (New York: Henry Holt, 2019).

If you are a political conservative and aspire to work after serving in a Republican Presidential Administration, take a job with a Liberal Republican like George H. W. Bush or George W. Bush.
