Thomas Stearns Eliot made the important distinction between culture and civilization. 

Edward Albee’s 1962 play explores how Western culture explores the difference between reality and illusion and the difficulty of achieving a harmonious marriage.

The aborted fetus which Alfie recognizes is a baby is a metaphor for the death of Christianity as the determining influence in shaping Western culture.
