Free Ukraine and Russia!

February 24, 2022

The lives of Ukrainians were diminished yesterday by the decision of one man to grow a post-Soviet Russia into a new Russian Empire. This act returns Ukraine to Russia from which it was wrenched by Josef Stalin.

Perceptive observers of Vladimir Putin, including former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, believe that Putin is living in his own “scary” world. Indeed, a Russian colleague believes that Putin is still, in his own mind, an officer in the KGB more than 30 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

But what would I know? I’m not a psychologist.

I do know that the thirty years since collapse of the USSR saw development of an independent Ukraine recognized as independent by other independent nations and recognized in the minds and souls of Ukrainian citizens.

That recognition is not a part of Vladimir Putin’s world, a world diminished by an ideology no longer socially effective. Putin’s dream is that of an invigorated Russia enlarged by return of Ukraine to its parent.

Because other nations want to avoid a nuclear war they talk boldly while carrying a very tiny stick. That means that the future of Ukraine is in the hands of Ukrainians. Their desire for a free and independent Ukraine will fuel a massive insurgency and impel Russian dissidents to openly challenge their new Czar.

How many years will it take to bring down Putin and free Ukraine?

Not many.
