Dickinson is Back Winning Horse Races

April 29, 2022

Thoroughbred racing features great horses, trainers and colorfully attired jockeys.

Secretariat, Cigar and Fusiaichi Pegasus are three great thoroughbred horse.

Javier Castellano, Jose Ortiz and Kendrick Carmouche are great “jocks” riding at Belmont.

And Bill Mott, Clement Christoph and Todd Pletcher are tops in their league of trainers.

Though Yorkshire-born thoroughbred trainer, Michael Dickinson, trains very few horses, he is a force to be reckoned with. When racing horses in England, Dickinson trained a record 12 winners on Boxing Day in 1982.

Rigorously ethical, Dickinson once hired private detectives to monitor the barns of a successful New York trainer he suspected of drugging. That trainer is among the three listed here.

In 2007 he left the training of horses to build and manage a training facility using synthetic turf. Dickinson believes that racing on dirt is out of step with less dangerous racing on synthetic turf. Today many races are run on Dickinson’s “Tapeta” synthetic turf.

In 2019 Dickinson was again racing thoroughbreds and won a Graded Stakes race for $175,000 at Woodbine Racecourse in Canada. Dickinson’s entry, Theodora B, paid $24.10 for a $2.00 Win wager.

Yesterday, May 28, Dickinson entered Rheaume, a first time starter in the 1st race at Belmont for a Purse of $94,000 for Fillies And Mares Three Years Old and Upward. Rheaume went off at 6/1 and won paying $17.40 for a $2 “win” wager.

Belmont Racecourse is located in Nassau County on Long Island. And Long Island is an ideal place to live, as long as you don’t have to commute to Manhattan. Long Island also is host to Teddy Roosevelt’s mansion, “Sagamore Hill,” near Oyster Bay and extends to the far and beautiful reaches of Suffolk County.

I avoid placing bets at tracks governed by the New York State Racing Commission, however, because its light regulatory hand contributes to fixed races and collusion between jocks. I was surprised that Dickinson entered a horse at Belmont. But he knew what he was doing. Rheaume ran one of the best races of three horses I’ve seen race this year.
